Sadly, Runescape is no longer played in a browser because Jagex could not be bothered to leverage the browser as their all time best marketing tool to convert from Java to HTML5 after browsers stopped supporting Java. Anyone that knows the history of RS knows that being a browser MMO is what gave them the reach to extend to a larger audience to compete with application based mmo's. This means that Runescape cannot remain on this list due to the fact that there is no longer a browser based version of the game to play. In the past, it would be irresponsible for me to leave out Runescape, now it's irresponsible if I keep it listed.

What follows is the former review of Runescape back when it was still a PBBG, and still glorious.

A Little History

Runescape classic launched in 2001 with a major update to launch Runescape II in 2004. At the time of this writing (2016), Runescape II still has over 100,000 users. However, Runescape III launched in July 2013 and looks more modern than her predecessors. In 2015 Google Chrome halted support for the Unity plugin, required by Runescape to run the game in a browser, and with that change many fans of Runescape and other PBBG's thought that that would be the end of Unity. However, rather than kill Unity, it pushed Chrome users back to Mozilla Firefox and at the time of this writing, Unity is still popular.

Runescape III can be played as both an application based MMO with support for Windows, Linux, and Mac but is also played in a browser, primarily Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera. Thus Runescape has a much larger reach than many other MMO's and this has lent well to their overall success.

Runescape Guinness Records

Runescape has been rather quiet about their accomplishments but it is often surprising to some to learn that Runescape sits atop the mountain when it comes to competing MMORPG's. For example, Runescape holds many Guinness world records:

  • Highest member count for an MMORPG with over 254,994,744 users.
  • The most prolifically updated MMORPG with over 1,014 updates.
  • The highest count of original music compositions with over 1,198 music pieces.
  • The most popular free MMORPG for 2 years in a row.
  • The most fish caught in an MMORPG: 8 Billion fish in 2012.
  • First MMORPG to release an old school version.
  • 180+ deep campaign quests with storytelling.
  • Character voices.
  • Random Dungeons.
  • Runescape classic is available for retro gamers.
  • Unlock and improve any or all 26 skills.
  • Feed, raise, and customize your own pets.
  • Customizable player housing. Design, build, and show off your house to friends.
  • Build your own ship and manage your own sea port.
